Landsend winter league 2020 1st rd

Updated: Dec 21, 2020

First match of this year's winter league at Landsend fishery, I was drawn peg 34 which I was promptly informed was a decent peg. The league is decided with section points, 5 man sections, I was hoping to get off to a steady start, you drop one result and can have one standin if required.

I started dobbing across with bread, about 2 foot short of the bank and quite deep 3foot or so. For the first 45mins all I could get was roach (the roach would take any size piece of bread i put on and were a bit of a pest), I did mess about with the depth of the rig and tried a little closer to the island. Just as I was about to give up on dobbing I hooked and landed a carp about 6lb. It was quickly followed by another about 8lb (foul hooked but I landed it).

I persisted with dobbing, but the sun was making it hard to see my float and it just felt like it had died.

By now the Angler on peg 36 was miles ahead as he had been catchin

g dobbing from the start and was obviously on some fish. Tony Rixon had got off to a great start also, but he wasn't in my section. Everyone else was struggling and my 2 carp put me in a good position.

I went to the bottom of the far shelf with maggot, I fed loose GB through a tiny pole pot and fished maggot over it, I

kept at this for a while, I was not feeding every put, but I hoped the GB might help bring in a carp. I was hooking roach regularly, I was losing a few my elastic was a bit fierce but if I hooked a carp i needed to be able to get it in.

I decided to start another line at bottom of far shelf a bit further along and this one I fed with a big pot of loose GB and some maggots.

I had another little go at dobbing with no results.

I decided to feed some liquidised bread through a tiny pole pot and see if this might draw in some better fish? I stuck at this for a while it seemed to result in smaller roach☹.

Over the new GB fed line i had a few more fish some better roach and a couple of skimmers.

The bread line was changed to maggot and I started feeding maggots through a tiny pole pot on both lines. The stamp of the fish improved.

I big potted maggots over one line and continued to tiny pot over the other, I switched between these lines until the end of the match, the tiny pot line was best but I did catch over both.

13lb 9oz of Carp and 7lb 10oz of silvers gave me a total of 21lb 3oz, enough for second in section and top silvers weight on the lake. I did pick up default section money as peg 36 weighed 94lb to win the match.

Perhaps I should have come shorter and focused on the silvers, but was never going to catch 94lb so either way I think I got the best result I could on the day😊👍

ADDENDUM

A slight miss understanding by me, this league is actually 2 sections of 10 anglers (not 4 sections of 5anglers). However the on the day payou has mini sections of 5 anglers. This basically means that for the league i finished 3rd in section. On the day I came 2nd in my mini section(default pickup as my mini section was won by match winner)😊
