Its been a few months since the first round of this winter league, which is now more of a spring league thanks to lock down restrictions.
I was on A section in the rotation and was reasonably happy when I was drawn peg 3. A good peg, in a section full of good pegs. I was thinking 3rd might be possible in my section, as pegs 9 and 5 were in form.
Peg 3 is on the island which meant I needed to take three or four short walks over the bridge to get my tackle to my peg (I didn't bring my trolley), this isn't a problem, but was made a little more intresting today, as a Canadian goose was attacking me everytime I crossed the bridge🤣🤣🤣😂.
Once at the peg I setup a rig for tight over against the mud line. One for 2 foot of water across, one for top kit and 2, another for down the middle and finally a margin rig down to the next platform.
I big potted down the middle on the all in (groundbait, dead maggots and a pinch of micro). I then started short on topkit and two lines 4mm were fed with 6mm expander on the hook.
Most people had started by going across, so when I hooked a fish in the first 10mins short, I was thinking my gamble had paid off. Unfortunately the fish was foul hooked and was promptly lost☹.
After 30mins and no fish I went over onto the mudline, feeding groundbait with expander on the hook 3 fish were quickly hooked, 2 were lost and a small F1 was landed.
I stuck at this line and I was steadily catching F1s with the odd big carp also showing, when it slowed or went funny I would drop onto my other lines to give it a rest. I never caught much over the other lines.
As the match went on and the fish fed more it got hard to get clean bites and my catch rate slowed. I decided in the last hour to big pot maggots over my mudline and see if I could settle the fish. I also setup a new margin line to my left tight against the bank.
I spent the last hour rotating between the margin and mudline and put some nice big fish in the bag.
I weighted 67lb 1oz, which was enough for second overall and second in my section. I know have 2 section seconds in the league so not too bad at the moment. Next one is May1st on B section😊.
